Supporting a new care home from construction to completion

DW Energy delivered the electrical and energy infrastructure for a new purpose-built care home in Worthing, West Sussex.

The facility, The Poets, was developed by South Coast Nursing Homes to provide a modern and comfortable environment for its residents. Working alongside Pilbeam Construction, we brought together the building’s electrical, safety, resident-support and renewable energy systems within one coordinated project.

Managing these services as a joined-up package helped simplify a complex part of the build and ensured each system was planned around the wider needs & energy use of the care home.

Bringing essential care home systems together

Care homes depend on reliable electrical infrastructure throughout the day and night. Alongside everyday lighting and power, they need specialist systems that support resident care, communication, safety and security.

Our work included the complete electrical installation, internal and external lighting, data infrastructure, nurse call, fire alarms and CCTV.

Rather than approaching these as separate installations, our team considered how they would work together within the completed building. We then coordinated their delivery alongside the wider construction programme, giving the project team a single point of responsibility across several connected services.

Generating renewable electricity on site

A care home can have significant electricity requirements, with essential equipment and services operating continuously.

To help meet some of this demand on site, DW Energy installed a 161-panel solar PV system across the available roof space. The design worked around the shape and orientation of the building, making productive use of several roof areas.

The completed system provides the care home with its own source of renewable electricity, helping to reduce the amount of power it needs to draw from the grid & futureproof themselves against rising electricity bills.

Preparing the care home for electric vehicles

Six EV charging points were also installed as part of the development, providing dedicated charging facilities at the site.

Including them during construction allowed the chargers to be properly integrated with the care home’s electrical infrastructure. It also prepared the facility for the changing transport needs of staff, visitors and operational vehicles without requiring EV charging to be treated as a separate addition later.

One coordinated solution for a modern care environment

Over the course of the 12-month project, DW Energy worked as part of the wider construction team to deliver the electrical systems the care home would rely on once operational.

The completed installation brings together reliable lighting and power, resident-support technology, fire and security systems, renewable electricity generation and EV charging within one coordinated solution.

The project demonstrates the value of considering these requirements together from the outset. For care homes and other facilities with significant or continuous electricity needs, this approach can make construction easier to manage while ensuring the finished building is equipped for both its immediate operation and future energy requirements.
