Commercial EV charging at Shoreham Port
Shoreham Port needed reliable overnight charging for the first two electric HGVs in its haulage fleet. The system had to work within the constraints of the existing electrical supply while keeping disruption across the operational port to a minimum.
DW Energy designed and delivered an integrated energy system consisting of two 80 kW Rolec EV chargers and a 200 kWh battery storage system. This was connected to the port’s existing 90 kWp solar PV array, helping to provide the majority of the required electrical demand from renewable energy.

Electric HGV charging within an operational port
Introducing electric HGVs created a new energy requirement for Shoreham Port: charging heavy vehicles reliably overnight without exceeding the capacity of the existing electrical supply.
The installation also had to be completed within a live port environment. Vehicle movements and normal operations needed to continue safely throughout the electrical and civil engineering works.
Integrated EV charging, battery storage and solar PV
DW Energy designed a coordinated commercial energy system comprising:
- Two 80 kW Rolec EV chargers
- A 200 kWh battery storage system
- Integration with the existing 90 kWp solar PV array
- Electrical upgrades and new cabling
- Trenching, ducts and concrete charger plinths
- White lining to support safe vehicle access
Battery storage allows electricity generated by the solar array to be retained and used when the HGVs charge overnight. The complete system was designed around the port’s existing electrical supply, operational requirements and plans for fleet electrification.
Reliable overnight fleet charging delivered on time and within budget
Shoreham Port now has the infrastructure required to charge its first two electric HGVs overnight, with solar PV and battery storage supporting the site’s electrical demand.
Despite the tight programme and the challenges of working within an operational port, DW Energy completed the project on time and within budget while keeping disruption to a minimum.
The project demonstrates how commercial EV charging can form part of a wider site energy strategy, combining fleet charging, battery storage and existing renewable generation within one coordinated system.
